This is an 18 week black and white photography program that will teach students the fundamentals of analog film photography. Students will utilize these traditional photographic methods to portray their own visual interpretations of the world around them.
Students will also explore various traditional and contemporary styles and approaches to photographic storytelling through presentations, guest speakers and established local photographers. Each student will be encouraged to find their own unique, personal artistic voice in order to create a body of photographic work that will be shared with the public via online and gallery exhibitions.
Students will demonstrate mastery of the analog photographic process including 35 mm camera functions, film processing, and making photographic prints in the darkroom. Instruction will be delivered through presentations, demonstrations and hands-on application. Elements and Principles of Design, composition, proper exposure and final presentation will be covered, in addition to class critiques and discussions regarding their photographic imagery.
Students will:
Understand the basic components and operation of a 35mm film camera.
Demonstrate the process of film development.
Produce traditional black and white prints in the darkroom employing filters and advanced printing techniques as needed.
Create a series of works that tell a story.

Develop understanding and appreciation for the various historical and contemporary works of documentary photography.

Students are expected to check in every Tuesday from 4:30pm – 6:30pm. The lab will be accessible and the teacher will be present by 4 pm. The lab will be open until 9pm if students wish to work longer or need to wait for pick up. Please feel free to contact the instructor during class via the CPR line: 216-389-8756.
While this class bears no cost to students, it is not free. We expect each student to make an 18 week commitment to attend all the scheduled classes unless there is an emergency. Every week we will be learning new skills, watching presentations and/or guest speakers.
Students are able to make up missed time or put in extra hours any time the lab is open!
