About the Program

This program draws from the playful, unconventional, and theatrical photographic style of Frank Matsura, known for his imaginative portraits of residents in Okanogan County, Washington.

Immediately following the film screening at Playhouse Square, attendees are invited to participate in a one-hour portrait session experience held in the Allen Theatre Lobby that reinterprets Matsura’s distinctive approach to portraiture through a contemporary lens.

Portraits will be taken by Cleveland-based artist Anny Nguyen, whose work spans commercial, advertising, and portrait photography. Her practice centers on diversity, storytelling, and self-expression across mediums, bringing a thoughtful and dynamic approach to each subject. Using a staged backdrop and her camera, Anny will create portraits that feel both intentional and expressive.

Each portrait will reflect personal narratives, highlighting participants’ cultural, ethnic, and familial identities while drawing visual inspiration from themes and details in the film.

Participants(individuals/groups) are encouraged to actively shape their portraits by bringing meaningful personal items and styling themselves in ways that reflect their identity. Suggestions include:

  • Family heirlooms

  • Archival photographs

  • Cultural or traditional attire

  • Contemporary clothing (graphic tees, formalwear, etc.)

Participants will receive their portraits via email or text message
